Scanning the Jurassic Coastline
Over the past two years, Preview has been asked to take on some highly unusual scanning projects and the company has gained a reputation for its ability to handle large documents and other objects that are historic or delicate… or both.
When a 95 mile stretch of the Dorset and East Devon Coast – the “Jurassic Coast” - was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001 the three local councils responsible for the Western gateway at Exmouth decided to mark the occasion in a highly visible way.
The councils commissioned local artist Jane Witheridge to create a series of banners to illustrate aspects of the geology and palaeontology of this unique coastline. Jane worked with GCSE students from Exmouth Community College to create six stunning silk paint on silk artworks measuring 2.0m by 0.9m – approx 6 feet six inches by 3 feet. The banners represent the three periods of the Mesozoic Era – Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous - spanning 185 million years of Earth history.
Preview was called in to assist with scanning the delicate artworks. A large format colour scanner was used to digitise in 24 bit colour and the output sent to “print ready” uncompressed TIFF files – each file was over 700 megabytes in size!
The flag banners are to be printed on spun polyester and displayed on a 48 specially designed flagpoles in 6 prominent locations in and around Exmouth.
The flag banners will be unveiled for the first time at the Exmouth Summer Festival between 26th - 30th May 2005. |
